Well that didn’t take very long did it. Just 8 months after he was sent to jail for killing Reeva Steenkamp, South African prison officials have recommended that Oscar Pistorius be released from prison on August 21st to go under house arrest. He will then have served a sixth of his 5 year sentence. A memeber of his family has said that they were told he would be granted correctional supervision by the end of August.
He’s not in the clear just yet since prosecuters will appeal the original decision in November, but by then he could technically be out of jail already under house arrest. If the appeal finds him guilty he could face at least 15 years in jail.
“The Correctional Services Department says it has recommended to the Parole Board that Oscar Pistorius be released on probation on 21 August, three months before an appeal of his murder acquittal is set to be heard.
The Supreme Court of Appeal has confirmed it will hear the State’s appeal against Pistorius’s murder acquittal in November.” [EWN]
Now you know.
UPDATE:
Confirmed.
“The acting national commissioner of correctional services Mr Zach Modise has confirmed that the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) of Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, sat on June 5 [Friday] 2015 and approved the placement of Oscar Pistorius under correctional supervision with effect from August 21 2015,” the department said in a statement.” [News24]
